Target Information
Caspase 7 is part of a family of cysteine proteases divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Apoptotic caspases are involved in cell death, while inflammatory caspases are linked to immune responses to microbial pathogens. Executioner caspases, such as Caspase 7, are activated by initiator caspases and cleave cellular substrates leading to apoptosis. Caspase 7 was identified based on its homology with caspases 1 and 3 and the C. elegans cell death protein CED-3. Alternative splicing of Caspase-7 mRNA produces three distinct isoforms. Caspase-7 activity can be directly inhibited by XIAP expression. Diseases associated with CASP7 include Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus 17 and Aleutian Mink Disease.
