Target Information
Phosphorylation of receptors by protein kinases is a process that can be reversed by a group of enzymes called protein phosphatases. Coordinated control of kinases and phosphatases allows cells to rapidly switch between phosphorylated and dephosphorylated protein states in response to environmental stimuli. Dysregulation of these processes can lead to uncontrolled cell growth associated with cancers and developmental disorders. Protein phosphatases are generally not highly substrate-specific, so changes in their activity can broadly affect dephosphorylation and turnover of phosphoproteins, influencing multiple signaling pathways and physiological responses.
