Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily and include three highly homologous subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors play a key role in regulating neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
The alpha2B adrenergic receptor subtype associates with eIF-2B, a guanine nucleotide exchange protein involved in translation regulation. A polymorphic variant lacking three glutamic acids from a repeat element shows decreased G protein-coupled receptor kinase-mediated phosphorylation and desensitization. This variant is associated with reduced basal metabolic rate in obese individuals and may contribute to obesity pathogenesis.
The alpha2B adrenergic receptor gene contains no introns in either its coding or untranslated sequences.
