Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form and cleaved into an active 17 kDa protein via inflammasome activation. IL-1β lacks a classical secretion signal and is released through an alternative pathway alongside caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1RA. IL-1β plays a key role in innate immune defense and is associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. Neutralizing antibodies against IL-1β have potential therapeutic value.
