Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TNNI3, also known as cardiac-specific troponin I, TnI, Troponin I) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle. It forms a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT).
TnT binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex, anchored by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments.
Calcium binding to TnC induces structural changes that release the inhibitory region of TnI, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction.
Blood levels of TnI and TnT serve as diagnostic indicators of heart muscle damage and help differentiate angina from myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro.
Mutations in the TNNI3 gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
