HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) belongs to the herpesvirus family (Herpesviridae).

HSV-1 and HSV-2 are highly contagious and infect humans.
HSV-1 (Human herpes virus 1, HHV-1) typically causes cold sores.
HSV-2 (Human herpes virus 2, HHV-2) is responsible for most genital herpes cases.
Transmission occurs through viral shedding from infected individuals.
The virion contains a large double-stranded linear DNA genome within a capsid and viral envelope.
HSV strains have over 70 open reading frames (ORFs).
HSV has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
