Target Information
Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a growing peroxidase family associated with cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Mammalian Prx proteins (about 50 isoforms) share active site cysteine residues and thiol-specific antioxidant activity. Six mammalian members are classified as typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, and 1-Cys Prx. Except for Prx VI (1-Cys subgroup), the other five 2-Cys Prx types function as thioredoxin-dependent peroxidases (TPx), utilizing thioredoxin, thioredoxin reductase, and NADPH as reducing systems. Mammalian Prxs are 20–30 kDa proteins with diverse subcellular localization: Prx I, II, and VI in cytosol; Prx III in mitochondria; Prx IV in ER and secretion; and Prx V in peroxisome, mitochondria, and cytosol.
