Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms complexes with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin is involved in regulating short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene can lead to X-linked mental retardation.
