Target Information
Immunoglobulin classes share a basic four-polypeptide chain structure composed of two heavy chains and two light chains (kappa and lambda). Both light chains have a molecular weight of approximately 22.5 kDa and consist of variable and constant regions. They can be differentiated by the antigenic properties of the constant region, with a typical kappa to lambda ratio of 70:30.
Antibodies to the kappa light chain are useful in identifying leukemias, plasmacytomas, and certain non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Demonstration of clonality in lymphoid infiltrates indicates malignancy.
