Target Information
The WRN gene encodes a member of the RecQ subfamily and the DEAH subfamily of DNA and RNA helicases. These enzymes are involved in various aspects of DNA metabolism, including transcription, replication, recombination, and repair. The WRN protein contains a nuclear localization signal at the C-terminus and is primarily localized in the nucleolus. It exhibits intrinsic 3′ to 5′ DNA helicase activity and 3′ to 5′ exonuclease activity. Through interactions with the Ku70/80 heterodimer, WRN may participate in double-strand DNA break repair. Mutations in this gene cause Werner syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by premature aging.
