Target Information
NF2 encodes a protein, Merlin, that is similar to some members of the ERM family of proteins that link cytoskeletal components with cell membrane proteins. Merlin interacts with cell-surface proteins, cytoskeletal regulators, and ion transport regulators.
This gene is highly expressed during embryonic development, and in adults, expression is significant in Schwann cells, meningeal cells, lens, and nerve.
Mutations in NF2 are associated with neurofibromatosis type II, characterized by nervous system and skin tumors and ocular abnormalities. Multiple isoforms are produced via alternative splicing.
