Target Information

This protein belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family. The ALDH1A2 gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of retinoic acid (RA) from retinaldehyde. Retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, acts as a hormonal signaling molecule essential for tissue development and maintenance. Studies in mouse models indicate that ALDH1A2 and CYP26A1 jointly regulate embryonic retinoic acid levels, supporting posterior organ development and preventing spina bifida. Three transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
