Target Information
The SMN1 gene is part of a 500 kb inverted duplication on chromosome 5q13. This duplicated region contains multiple genes and repetitive elements, making it prone to rearrangements and deletions. The telomeric and centromeric copies of this gene encode the same survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. The SMN complex is essential for the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), key components of the spliceosome. Mutations in SMN1 are known to cause spinal muscular atrophy types 1 and 2.
