Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions with an accompanying anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for transporting iron from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. Approximately one-third of total blood transferrin contains bound iron under normal conditions. Measurement of transferrin levels can indicate blood iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also promote cell proliferation.
