Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays a key role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β) acting as a co-receptor for MHC class I molecules.
CD8α is also found as a homodimer on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Upon MHC-I/peptide binding, it recruits Lck kinase, promoting lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8⁺ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
