XKR8 단백질은 세포사멸(apoptosis) 시 인지질 스크램블링을 매개하여 세포 표면에 phosphatidylserine 노출을 촉진합니다.
Phosphatidylserine은 세포사멸 세포의 표면에만 존재하는 특이적 마커로, 식세포에 의해 인식되어 제거 신호로 작용합니다.
XKR8은 caspase 절단에 의해 활성화되며, 세포사멸 시작 이전에는 작용하지 않습니다.
