Target Information
Regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins contain a conserved 120 amino acid domain termed the RGS domain, which acts as a GTPase-activating protein to reduce signaling from receptor-activated G-alpha subunits.
RGS21 is a newly identified member of this family, selectively expressed in subpopulations of taste bud cells and co-expressed with bitter and sweet transduction components such as alpha-gusticin, phospholipase Cβ2, T1R2/T1R3 sweet taste receptors, and T2R bitter taste receptors.
Binding assays show that RGS21 interacts with alpha-gusticin and possibly T1R receptors, suggesting a role in sweet and bitter taste transduction processes.
