Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission. Additionally, glutamate regulates enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein-coupled receptors, known as metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
Group-I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
Group-II (mGluR2, mGluR3) and Group-III receptors inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
