Target Information
Tight junctions are a form of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial sheets, forming continuous seals around cells and serving as a barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space. These junctions consist of continuous networking strands in the cytoplasmic leaflet with complementary grooves in the extracytoplasmic leaflet.
The Claudin 6 gene encodes a component of tight junction strands, belonging to the claudin family. This integral membrane protein functions as one of the entry cofactors for hepatitis C virus. Gene methylation may be involved in esophageal tumorigenesis. The gene is located adjacent to CLDN9 on chromosome 16.
