Target Information

BMPR1A is a Type I member of the TGF beta receptor superfamily of transmembrane ser/thr kinases which phosphorylates intracellular SMADs in response to bone morphogenic proteins. These receptors are closely related to the activin receptors, ACVR1 and ACVR2. The ligands of these receptors are members of the TGF-beta superfamily.
TGF-betas and activins transduce their signals through heteromeric complexes with two types of serine/threonine kinase receptors:

  • Type I receptors: ~50–55 kD
  • Type II receptors: ~70–80 kD

Type II receptors bind ligands independently but require type I receptors for signaling, whereas type I receptors need type II receptors for ligand binding.
