ALDH1A1 is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenases family, functioning as the second enzyme in the oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—differ in mobility, kinetics, and localization. Most Caucasians possess both isoforms, while approximately 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic form, lacking the mitochondrial isozyme, which may relate to increased alcohol sensitivity.
