Target Information
SPHK2, along with SPHK1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a key signaling molecule. S1P acts through G-protein coupled receptors to regulate diverse cellular processes such as differentiation, apoptosis, calcium mobilization, and cell motility. SPHK2 plays roles in cardiogenesis, vascular maturation, immune cell trafficking, and neuronal system regulation. Inhibitors of SPHKs are being explored as potential cancer therapeutics.
