Target Information
Meprins are multidomain zinc metalloproteases highly expressed in mammalian kidney and intestinal brush border membranes, leukocytes, and certain cancer cells. They hydrolyze various peptide and protein substrates and are implicated in cancer and intestinal inflammation. Mature meprins form oligomers of alpha and/or beta subunits: alpha homooligomers are secreted, while beta-containing oligomers are membrane-bound. The MEP1B gene encodes the beta subunit. Gene disruption in mice affects embryonic viability, renal gene expression, and alpha subunit distribution in kidney and intestine.
