Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane-bound homodimeric enzyme localized to the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. This enzyme, using iron and ascorbate as cofactors, catalyzes hydroxylation of lysyl residues in collagen-like peptides. Hydroxylysyl groups serve as carbohydrate attachment sites in collagen, critical for intermolecular crosslink stability.
Deficiencies in lysyl hydroxylase activity are linked to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIB, and mutations in this gene are associated with Bruck syndrome.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
