ATP synthase is a highly conserved enzyme found in plants, fungi, bacteria, and animals. It catalyzes the reversible conversion of ADP and phosphate to ATP, driven by a proton flux across the membrane during electron transfer.
The enzyme comprises two main sections:
- F1 ATP-ase (soluble): composed of alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon subunits
- F0 ATP-ase (membrane embedded): composed of a, b, and c subunits
