Target Information
This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase. Mitochondrial ATP synthase catalyzes ATP synthesis by utilizing an electrochemical proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthase consists of two linked multi-subunit complexes:
- F1 complex (soluble catalytic core): composed of 5 subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon) with a stoichiometry of 3α, 3β, and one each of the others.
- Fo complex (membrane-spanning proton channel): composed of three main subunits (a, b, c).
This gene encodes the gamma subunit of the catalytic core. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. A pseudogene is also present on chromosome 14.
