Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPL36 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 2p.
