Glutathione는 세포를 자유 라디칼에 의한 산화 손상으로부터 보호하고, 외인성 물질의 해독 및 막 수송 등 다양한 생물학적 기능에 관여합니다.
이 단백질은 homodimer 형태로 작용하여 glutathione 생합성의 두 번째 단계인, γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine을 glutathione으로 전환하는 ATP 의존적 반응을 촉매합니다.
이 유전자의 결함은 glutathione synthetase 결핍증의 원인이 될 수 있습니다.
