Target Information

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in all mammalian tissues.
CA IX is one of the most inducible genes under hypoxia via HIF-1α, due to its stability and membrane localization.
Carbonic anhydrases play a key role in regulating pH by controlling hydrogen ion (H⁺) flux in normal tissues.
Under hypoxic conditions, inhibition of CA IX increases cell death, making CA IX a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
