Target Information
This gene encodes class IV alcohol dehydrogenase 7 (mu or sigma subunit), a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. These enzymes metabolize ethanol, retinol, aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products.
ADH7 shows low ethanol oxidation activity but high retinol dehydrogenase activity, contributing to retinoic acid synthesis, which is essential for cellular differentiation. Its expression is significantly higher in the stomach than in the liver, distinguishing it from other family members.
