Target Information
AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene also linked to colon cancer and melanoma. The AXL protein is a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces signals from the extracellular matrix into the cytoplasm by binding growth factors such as GAS6. It is involved in cell proliferation and apoptotic cell clearance via TAM receptors. Mice lacking TAM receptors show degenerative and autoimmune phenotypes similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
AXL may serve as an entry receptor for filoviruses and is used to identify Siglec 6+/Axl+ dendritic cells. Expression of AXL can be upregulated by TLR ligands (e.g., LPS, poly I:C). Soluble AXL, generated by proteolytic cleavage, may indicate inflammation or cancer.
