Target Information
In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate numerous cellular processes such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases play a key role in this regulation. The protein phosphatase (PP) holoenzyme is typically a trimeric complex consisting of a regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunit.
Major families of protein phosphatase catalytic subunits include PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C. An additional catalytic subunit, PPX (also known as PP4), is considered part of a novel PP family. The PP2A family includes subfamily members PP2A alpha and PP2A beta, which associate with various regulatory subunits such as PP2A-A alpha, PP2A-A beta, PP2A-B alpha, PP2A-B beta, PP2A-C alpha, PP2A-C beta, PP2A-B56 alpha, and PP2A-B56 beta.
