Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPS21 gene encodes a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S21E family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm. Alternative splice variants encoding different isoforms have been described but not verified. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
