Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
This gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L31E family. It is localized in the cytoplasm.
Elevated expression has been observed in familial adenomatous polyps compared to normal tissues.
As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
