Background
The RET proto-oncogene (RET) in Homo sapiens encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase belonging to the cadherin superfamily. RET plays a crucial role in neural crest development and can undergo oncogenic activation by cytogenetic rearrangement. Mutations in this gene are linked to multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIA and IIB, Hirschsprung disease, and medullary thyroid carcinoma. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, though additional variants may exist with unconfirmed biological validity.
