Background
The protein encoded by the RBL1 gene is similar in sequence and possibly function to the retinoblastoma 1 (RB1) gene product. Both proteins act as tumor suppressors involved in cell cycle regulation, being phosphorylated during the S to M phase transition and dephosphorylated in the G1 phase. They can form complexes with adenovirus E1A and SV40 large T-antigen proteins, and inhibit transcription of E2F-regulated cell cycle genes. Due to these similarities, the RBL1-encoded protein is also considered a potential tumor suppressor.
