Background
The RB1 gene encodes a negative regulator of the cell cycle and was the first tumor suppressor gene identified. The encoded protein stabilizes constitutive heterochromatin to maintain chromatin structure. The active, hypophosphorylated form binds transcription factor E2F1. Mutations in this gene are associated with childhood retinoblastoma, bladder cancer, and osteogenic sarcoma. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
