Background
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility. Polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) leads to filamentous actin (F-actin), forming a two-stranded helix. Each actin molecule can bind to four others. The actin family consists of three main isoform groups: alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha actins are predominant in muscle tissues and are essential components of the contractile apparatus. Mutations in actin genes have been associated with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) and familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC). [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
