Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which regulates cellular processes such as growth, differentiation, mitosis, and oncogenic transformation. This receptor-type PTP contains an extracellular domain, a single transmembrane segment, and two tandem intracytoplasmic catalytic domains. It plays an essential role in T- and B-cell antigen receptor signaling by interacting with receptor complex components or activating Src family kinases. Additionally, it suppresses JAK kinases, functioning as a regulator of cytokine receptor signaling. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed.
