Background

Protein tyrosine kinase 2 (PTK2) Homo sapiens
This gene encodes a cytoplasmic protein tyrosine kinase concentrated in focal adhesions formed between cells and extracellular matrix components. The encoded protein belongs to the FAK subfamily of protein tyrosine kinases and is distinct from other subfamilies. Activation of PTK2 is an early step in cell growth and intracellular signal transduction pathways triggered by neural peptides or cell-extracellular matrix interactions. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, with four full-length forms determined.
