This gene encodes one of the catalytic subunits of protein kinase A (PKA).
The inactive form exists as a tetrameric holoenzyme with two regulatory and two catalytic subunits.
cAMP binding induces dissociation into regulatory dimers and free catalytic monomers.
PKA-mediated phosphorylation regulates key cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis.
Constitutive activation due to mutations or duplications involving this gene is associated with adrenal cortex hyperplasias and corticotropin-independent Cushing’s syndrome.
