Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It is a key energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Under metabolic stress, AMPK becomes activated and phosphorylates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), enzymes that regulate fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The beta-1 subunit may positively regulate AMPK activity and influence its localization via myristoylation and phosphorylation. It also serves as an adaptor molecule mediating AMPK complex assembly.
