Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the PI3/PI4-kinase family and is closely related to ATM, which is mutated in ataxia telangiectasia. ATR and ATM share similarity with Schizosaccharomyces pombe rad3, a checkpoint gene required for cell cycle arrest and DNA repair. ATR phosphorylates CHK1, RAD17, RAD9, and BRCA1. Mutations are associated with Seckel syndrome. Alternative splicing and polyA variants exist.
