Cellular Localization Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Insulin promotes recruitment to the plasma membrane from a pool localized in the trans-Golgi network or endosomes. Enriched in the somatodendritic compartment of neurons, also detected at the axonal shaft but excluded from the nerve terminal.

Background

  • Function: Sodium-dependent amino acid transporter mediating pH-sensitive, electrogenic cotransport of neutral amino acids and sodium ions (1:1 stoichiometry).
  • Regulation: Inhibited by N-methyl-D-glucamine and probably choline.
  • Expression: Ubiquitously expressed, with high levels in the central nervous system, especially in caudal regions. Expressed by glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons, astrocytes, and other non-neuronal cells in the cerebral cortex.
  • Induction: Up-regulated under hypertonic conditions and amino acid deprivation.
  • Post-translational Modification: Polyubiquitination by NEDD4L regulates degradation and activity.
  • Miscellaneous: Depletion of SLC38A2 by siRNA prevents recovery from hypertonic stress.
  • Similarity: Belongs to the amino acid/polyamine transporter 2 family.
