Background
This gene encodes an aspartic proteinase that belongs to the peptidase family A1. The encoded protein is a digestive enzyme produced in the stomach and constitutes a major component of the gastric mucosa. It is also secreted into the serum and synthesized as an inactive zymogen with a highly basic prosegment. The enzyme becomes active at low pH through self-cleavage of the prosegment. Polymorphisms in this gene are linked to susceptibility to gastric cancers. Serum levels serve as biomarkers for gastric diseases, including Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis. Alternate splicing produces multiple transcript variants, and a pseudogene exists on chromosome 1. (RefSeq, Oct 2009)
