Target Information
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine- and threonine-specific protein kinases activated by calcium and diacylglycerol. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in various cellular signaling pathways. They act as major receptors for phorbol esters, a class of tumor promoters. Each PKC family member has a specific expression profile and distinct cellular roles. PKC beta is implicated in B cell activation, apoptosis induction, endothelial proliferation, and intestinal sugar absorption. Mouse studies suggest roles in neuronal regulation and stress-related behaviors. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
