Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the ankyrin family of proteins that link integral membrane proteins to the spectrin-actin cytoskeleton. Ankyrins are involved in cell motility, activation, proliferation, contact, and maintenance of specialized membrane domains.
Most ankyrins consist of:
- Amino-terminal domain with multiple ankyrin repeats
- Central region with a conserved spectrin-binding domain
- Carboxy-terminal regulatory domain (variable and least conserved)
The Ankyrin B protein is essential for targeting and stability of Na/Ca exchanger 1 in cardiomyocytes. Mutations in this gene are associated with long QT syndrome 4. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
