Caspase 2 유전자는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화합니다.
Caspase의 연속적 활성화는 세포자멸사(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 합니다.
Caspase는 비활성 전구체 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 aspartic 잔기에서의 단백질 분해 과정을 통해 활성 효소를 형성합니다.
이 단백질의 절단은 다양한 세포자멸 자극에 의해 유도되며, 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이체가 생성되어 다양한 이소폼을 형성합니다.
