Target Information
Cytochrome C is an electron transporting protein located within the intermembrane space of mitochondria. It plays a critical role in oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. Release of cytochrome C from mitochondria to cytosol occurs upon apoptotic stimuli. In the cytoplasm, cytochrome C binds apoptotic protease activating factor, activating procaspase 9 and subsequently caspase 3, a key effector of apoptosis.
