Target Information
Heparan sulfate biosynthetic enzymes are key components in generating distinct heparan sulfate fine structures that mediate multiple biological activities.
The HS2ST1 gene encodes an enzyme that transfers sulfate to the 2-position of the iduronic acid residue of heparan sulfate.
Disruption of this gene in knockout mice results in the absence of kidney formation, indicating its essential role in signaling during kidney development.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different proteins have been identified.
